- Title: ‘A functional approach to additive focus particles in Spanish’
Within the framework of Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG), the pragmatic function Focus is assigned to the informatively most significant part of a Communicated Content (Hengeveld & Mackenzie, 2008: 89-92). Its morphosyntactic expression may adopt different procedures (cf. Dik 1997: 313), among which is the use of so-called focus particles. Unlike focus morphemes, focus particles not only express a pragmatic content, but also a concurrent semantic one: aspectuality, polarity, quantification, etc. Suddhoff (2010: 53) identifies three main semantic types of focus particles: a) additive, b) restrictive, c) scalar.
The aim of this lecture is to provide an FDG account of the main additive focus particles of Spanish: hasta ‘even’, incluso ‘even’, también ‘also/too’, and tampoco ‘neither/either’. The role played by the interface between the Interpersonal and Representational Levels will be emphasized.
