  • Title: Forms and functions of habitual markers: A cross-linguistic survey
  • Abstract: In many languages of the world, we find dedicated markers expressing that a situation is (was, will be) typical or usual. Oft-cited examples of such habitual markers include the English used to-construction, the Czech verbal suffix -va, and the Spanish auxiliary verb soler. In this talk, I will present the first results of an ongoing cross-linguistic investigation of habitual markers, focussing on how habitual meaning is expressed – i.e. its expression format – and how it may develop diachronically, i.e. its possible source meanings. A surprising finding is that several languages in the sample have more than one dedicated habitual marker, suggesting that languages may make finer distinctions than often assumed in the theoretical literature on habitual expressions. I will also discuss how the results of such a cross-linguistic investigation may be of use to descriptive linguists working on individual languages.
